What are Supergreens and why do you need them?

Greens are beginning to be viewed as a separate food category. Research is showing that greens interface with the body, as well as other food sources, in a different way than other vegetables. Victoria Boutenko (the leader in the Green Smoothie revolution) talks about greens as being the only food group that helps to digest other foods through stimulating the secretion of digestive enzymes. Many stomach problems, such as bloating and gas can be attributed to inadequate, and inadequately timed secretion of digestive juices.

Supergreens have the complete array of essential amino acids – these building blocks of protein are essential for the body to be able to repair and maintain itself. The body uses amino acids to help produce neurotransmitters which are the natural chemicals that enable communication between cells. Neorotransmitters also govern emotions, memory, behaviour, mental alertness and sleep. Deficiencies in these can lead to addictions, cravings, depression and learning and attention disorders.

Greens, when consumed in their whole form or as a smoothie, provide the body with essential insoluble fiber which helps cleanse the colon and rid the body of built up toxins and undigested fermenting foods. This can improve an infinite variety of ailments – as many diseases are compounded, or originate from a poor internal environment – including toxins and out of balance flora in the intestines and stomach.

Greens also facilitate a more alkaline body. The normal western diet with stress, lots of meat and dairy as well as alcohol and environmental pollutants result in an acidic internal environment. A pH-balanced environment (which is slightly alkaline) allows the optimal function necessary for the body to resist disease.

They contain lots of chlorophyll! Chlorophyll has a very similar composition to human blood and has been used as a potent healer throughout history. Chlorophyll has been referred to as “liquefied sun energy”. It facilitates oxygen transport, balances intentinal flora, is liver and other organ cleansing and balancing and helps to build up our blood and make our body more alkaline.

Algae were the first plants to appear on the planet billions of years ago. There are more than 30,000 species of algae – and blue-green algae like spirulina are the most primitive. Spirulina has no nucleus and the cell walls are soft and easily digested. Formed from the simplest of elements – water, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, phosphorous and sunlight, spirulina creates an extremely concentrated and amazingly complex food, rich in an incredible array of nutrients. It grows prolifically and in tropical environments – from the sun, it harvests the green pigment (chlorophyll) and the blue pigment (the protein phycocyanin, which gives spirulina it’s incredibly high protein content and thought to protect the kidneys and stimulate the immune system) Spirulina has the highest protein content of any plant source (65% - and as this is predigested, it provides the benefits quickly, without the energy-draining side effects of meat protein).

To protect itself from burning, spirulina produces high levels of its own beta-carotene – which is a powerful antioxidant and immune system supporter. As spirulina grows so abundantly, and harvesting becomes a process like lawn moving, it is a very sustainable food source.

Spirulina is a complete protein – providing the body with all eight essential amino acids, as well as essential fatty acids (omega’s 3, 6 and 9, including GLA fatty acid – gamma linolenic acid). GLA has been found to be particularly useful in reducing symptoms of arthritis and other degenerative diseases and balancing hormones (e.g. helping with premenstrual symptoms). GLA has also been associated with weight loss, improved energy levels (especially mental energy), mental clarity and alertness.

Spirulina also provides a vast array of minerals, vitamins, trace elements, phytonutrients, RNA, DNA, sulfolipids, glycogen and enzymes. Its protein bonded minerals are able to be assimilated by the body better than any synthetic variety. Its mucopolysaccharides relax and strengthen connective tissue, as well as reducing inflammation.

Chlorella is thought to be the most thoroughly researched food in history and is recognized as having the highest chlorophyll content of all known plants - it has 5 to 10 times the chlorophyll content of any other algae & has been used successfully in the treatment of cardiac hypertension and cleansing the bowel, kidneys, liver and bloodstream.

It is a fresh water, single-cell green algae that is known as "The Great Normaliser". It is renowned as a supplement for boosting the immune system, fighting infection and normalising body functions. It also has a tough indigestible cell wall which detoxifies & chellates the body by binding with heavy metals as it passes through the gastrointenstinal tract.

This is the young grass of the wheat grain. Because it is sprouted, it no longer contains gluten or other common allergens. It is best consumed fresh (cut and then juiced) so may not be as practical as some of the other supergreens.

Wheatgrass is a powerful cleanser and detoxifier, good at balancing blood sugar and is used for treating cancer, diabetes and other serious diseases. It is very alkalizing and for promoting healthy blood. It also provides chlorophyll, amino acids, is high in iron, oxygen, and enzymes and is one of the richest sources of vitamins A, B, and C. It is used for stimulating metabolism and normalizing thyroid gland function.

Seaweeds are marine algae, attached to the ocean floor by holdfasts. On our land, our soils are so demineralised and sick that it makes sense to source nutrients from the vegetation of the sea.

Sea vegetables help remove heavy metals, detoxify the body, are anti-biotic and anti-viral, provide a variety of trace minerals, growth hormones, lipids, plant sterols, amino acids, omega’s 3 and 6, anti-oxidants, flavenoids, polyphenol, help to regulate cholesterol, reduce arthritic pain and decrease the risk of cancer.
