These wonderful foods, sourced primarily from South America and the Himalyas, are super high in antioxidants, vitamin C and a plethora of other vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and trace elements. This makes them wonderful for immunity, beauty and for supporting disease recovery.

 

GOJI BERRIES

These wonderful berries are becoming more widely available. The plant is grown in the Himalayan mountains and has a 5000 year history in Tibet and Mongolia - there is even an annual 2 week festival to honour the berry. Traditionally this berry is associated with strength and longevity.

Goji’s contain 18 kinds of amino acids, all 8 essential amino acids, up to 21 trace minerals, high amounts of antioxidants, iron, polysaccharides, B & E vitamins, and many other nutrients. They are a great source of the antioxidant beta-carotene and vitamin C. They also contain zeaxanthin (one of the two carotenoids contained within the retina of the eye) which is essential for retinal health. Goji berries have reportedly assisted with heart health, insulin resistance and cancer.

They are great to add to salads, breakfast cereals and deserts or just to snack on, on their own. They can be brewed as a tea, consumed as a juice OR my favourite is to eat them coated in raw dark chocolate! Super-Superfood!

ACAI BERRY

 


 







Açaí (as-sigh-ee) is a berry derived from the Amazon. It is the primary food staple of the Amazon River communities. Açaí has a high concentration of a wide variety of antioxidants (3 grams of Acai will yield the equivalent of 395 blueberries (ORAC testing)), essential fatty acids (3, 6 and particularly 9, which is a great anti-inflammatory), amino acids and phytonutrients, calcium and iron, fiber and vitamin A.

This berry also contains phytosterols, a plant compound known to reduce cholesterol, treat symptoms associated with prostatic hyperplasia and aid in immune system function.

Acai is very high in the antioxidant anthocyanin (10 times more than an equal serving of red wine) which is particularly beneficial for the eyes, skin and heart.

Acai and guarana syrup is a popular drink in Brazil for sexual performance and is associated with anti-aging. Açaí tastes like a mixture of chocolate and berries. You can add 1 scoop of the dried berries to cereals, juices or smoothies.

CAMU BERRY

Camu Camu is a native bush to the Amazon. The Camu Camu fruit contains 16-20% vitamin C – more than any other Amazonian plant. As a fresh berry it contains 30 to 60 times more Vitamin C than an orange.

Vitamin C is very beneficial for boosting the immune system and in healing and eliminating scar tissue. The camu-camu berry is a source of phosphorus, calcium, potassium, iron, the amino acids serine, valine and leucine. Small amounts of the vitamins thiamine, riboflavin and niacin are also present.

Many have used camu-camu to support the immune system, maintain excellent eyesight, create beautiful skin and help maintain optimal clarity of mind in times of stress and anxiety. It is a great source of antioxidants and is anti-viral, anti-biotic, anti-inflammatory, and astringent.

Camu camu is used extensively for aiding fast recovery of common ailments such as colds and migraine headaches. Camu camu supports the body's defenses against the herpes virus.

It is generally dried and sold in its powdered form.

COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil helps to speed metabolism and provides the right kinds of fat and oils (especially if raw) allowing the body to drop excess weight and toxins and have more energy. Coconut oil restores natural saturated fat levels to the skin, subcutaneous fat layers, as well as to the individual cell membranes.

Unlike other fats, coconut oil is high in medium-chain fatty acids that help with weight-loss. This occurs because medium chain fatty acids are not easily stored and converted into triglycerides like long chain fatty acids. This saturated fat is considered a rare and important building block of every cell in the human body, and can actually reduce cholesterol and heart disease.
